Assessment is for Learning is a national initiative with representation from all parts of the Scottish education community.
There are three main areas of development:
Assessment FOR Learning - Assessment for learning is about supporting classroom learning and teaching.
Assessment AS Learning - Assessment as learning is about learning how to learn.
Assessment OF Learning - Assessment of learning is about gathering and interpreting the evidence.
Argyll and Bute has played a leading role in developments since the beginning of the AifL programme. A number of Argyll and Bute schools were pilot schools for projects in Phase 1 developments. Since then, schools have taken part as members of Associated Schools Groups (ASGs) – mixed groups of primary and/or secondary schools, working on various aspects of the programme. Schools are supported through the provision of resources, staff development and two assessment coordinators to develop and embed into practice the following components of AifL :
• Formative assessment
• Personal learning planning
• Local moderation procedures
• National Assessments

Self Assessment
This focus for the group has been to work co-operatively to develop ideas on pupil self-assessment. Most of the contributors work with learners in primary schools. The case studies reflect this bias. However, all the ideas that are presented can be and are being used in secondary classrooms. It is the skill of the teacher to recognise the principles and convert the ideas into the actual setting. Formative Assessment Labels
To be used to address some of the parental concerns associated with the use of formative assessment strategies eg when group work takes place and there may not be evidence in an individual jotter or to address the comment “This work hasn’t been marked”. Parents need to know what the particular strategies are - see AifL Parental Information leaflets listed above. Alternatively pupils could describe/ note the strategy used and the reasons for the use of the strategy.
The labels also help to remind the staff of the huge variety of strategies available!!
Click here to download a sheet of individual labels.
If you would like a cd with a complete sheet of each label please contact me by email. (Elaine.magor@ea.argyll-bute.sch.uk)
