Fiona's remit
Set up as part of the first National Cultural Strategy for Scotland, the co-ordinators liaise with arts and cultural organisations, including the heritage sector, to organise activities which ensure that our cultural resources are used to the advantage of all young people.
"The Cultural Co-ordinators in Schools pilot programme goes from strength to strength. Increased numbers of young people are being provided with the opportunity to participate in quality cultural activities. This leads to increased numbers of young people contemplating wider horizons, being interested in their future and equipped to make positive choices throughout their lives. I congratulate the Scottish Arts Council and Local Authorities for their continued support of this enlightened and pioneering national programme, and the individual Cultural Co-ordinators for their hard work and innovative approaches, which are ensuring that Scotland’s cultural resources are brought to the fore."

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport
Cultural Co-ordinators identify ways of maximising the potential contribution of cultural activities to young people’s education. The remit is wide and focuses on activities appropriate to the local context.
Generally, the remit includes:
* working with the Creative Links officer to implement the arts education strategy
* encouraging and facilitating cultural participation: visits, productions, performances, etc.
* liaising with artists and local and national cultural bodies and their education officers, such as museums, performing arts companies etc.
* developing the awareness of the contribution of culture to young people’s learning and development - both within and outwith the curriculum
* advising on ways of developing children’s creativity across the curriculum and its impact on learning.
Last year the Scottish Arts Council announced additional funding for the Cultural Co-ordinators in Schools programme over the next two years.
"This increased level of funding is in recognition of the positive role culture and the arts can make in the education and development of school children. Early exposure to arts and culture can have a hugely inspirational effect on young people. It’s crucial that school children are introduced to a wide range of cultural experiences from an early age, to help fire their imaginations and instil them with a love for the arts which will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
