John's remit

John GrantArgyll & Bute Council Music Services provides instruction in a range of musical instruments and genres in 74 primary and 9 secondary schools. In addition, the service also commissions a number of informal sector organisations to provide tuition in 6 further schools.

Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson said: "As a direct result of the activities generated by the Youth Music Initiative, there have been both identifiable benefits for children and their teachers and a step change in primary school provision. My congratulations go to all those who have played a part in making the YMI such a success throughout Scotland."

Using funds from the Scottish Executive’s Youth Music Initiative, it has also been possible to develop several whole-class activities in Argyll including Kodály singing and musicianship classes, recorder classes and Samba workshops. These activities are supported by a number of CPD opportunities for teachers and music instructors.

David McDonald, Youth Music Manager at the Scottish Arts Council said: "The Youth Music Initiative has highlighted the important wider benefits of engaging in music making activities which include increased levels of attainment, confidence, behaviour and concentration and above all has shown how music can provide a fun, valuable learning experience."
