Brand New Andrew & Fair Trade Fred

Hopscotch LogoGlasgow based Hopscotch Theatre Company will be touring a new theatre production entitled "Brand New Andrew & Fair Trade Fred", to a possible 200 schools across Scotland from January to July next year (2010).

Hopscotch Theatre Company have been touring theatre productions to primary schools for the past twenty one years. Performances normally take place in school dinner/ gym halls and use colourful and imaginative scenery and props. "Brand New Andrew & Fair Trade Fred" will have four actors playing various characters, will last for one hour and contain music and song.

Previously all Hopscotch shows have been aimed at P1 - P7, however, "Brand New Andrew & Fair Trade Fred" will be developed in such a way that there will be six different scenes within the script which are especially written for an older, S1 - S2 secondary school audience. The standard script will be suitable for P1 - P7 primary pupils. The cost is £450.00 for a performance. Audience size is an average of 250 to a maximum of 300 pupils.

Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood

Council Logo Primary SRE (Sex and Relationships Education)

All primary schools received new resource packs at the Area Headteacher's meetings in September 2009. These have been funded by NHS Highland and include:

• Living and Growing by Channel 4 (2006 version) resource packs comprising 3 resource books and accompanying DVD

• Planner linking Early, First and Second Level outcomes and experiences from CfE Health and Wellbeing

• Information on additional resources for SRE obtainable from School Nurses.

• Training on 28th January 2010 in Inveraray Conference Centre (ICC) for staff who deliver to P6/P7 pupils

Secondary SHARE (Sexual Health and Relationships Education)

All secondary schools were incited to send staff who deliver SRE to attend SHARE training lasting 3 days.
Each member of staff who attended received a comprehensive resource for use in their school. This was funded by Learning Teaching Scotland and thanks are due to Laura Stephenson, NHS Senior Health Promotion Officer (Sexual Health) who co-delivered all the training.

Substance Misuse

Council Logo Smoke Free Me

This programme was delivered in Sep/Oct 2009 for the second year across Argyll and Bute's primary schools with the help of funding from NHS Highland.
Resource packs were distributed to primary schools in August 2008 and P7 pupils (P6 and P7 on Islay/Jura/Mull/Iona) were invited to attend performances of a drama called "Stub it out" by Raenbow Productions in November. This tested the pupil's knowledge in a fun and entertaining way and was well received by all.
If funding is forthcoming again, the programme will be updated and delivered again in 2010.

Natural High

This alcohol/drugs programme for S1/S2 pupils was offered to all secondary schools in May 2009. David Graham , a talented singer/songwriter delivered his very interactive "show" in a very creative and imaginative way in six different locations. He performed his trademark song "Natural High" and achieved full audience participation (even the teachers!).
The pupils and staff from Campbeltown Grammar, Dunoon Grammar, Hermitage Academy, Lochgilphead High, Oban High and Tarbert Academy were all very positive and we hope to have David back in 2011 for the next S1/S2 cohort of pupils.
