Problem Solving Idea: Making Twenty Four
The rules are quite simple:
• Use all four numbers only use to make the number twenty four using the operations of arithmetic : adding, subtracting, multiplying and/or dividing.
• Each number must be used once and only one!
• Be careful ! Do not muddle up 6’s and 9’s. The base of the digit is towards the centre.

The Really Useful Maths Book
This is the book for teachers who want children to enjoy the challenge of learning mathematics and who wish to experiment with their teaching, to create rather than react, and take risks rather than play it safe. This is an accessible and jargon-free practical guide to making math meaningful, challenging, and interesting. It provides useful activities and advice for teachers, students, parents, and others who support children's learning.
Part 1 is organized around the strands of the National Numeracy Strategy. The emphasis is on developing different approaches to practical activities with children, noticing what happens, and building the necessary teaching skills around what works for you.
Part 2 develops more complex teaching strategies including how to optimize interactive teaching.

Active Learning in Maths - Numicon
Numicon’s visual, auditory and kinaesthetic approach appeals to different learning styles. Pupils learn through both seeing and feeling how Numicon patterns connect with each other. By physically manipulating Numicon to build constructions, make arrangements and patterns and play games using the feely bag, pupils will experience with both their hands and their eyes how numbers fit together. The powerful images can also open doors for children struggling with number, no matter how old they are.
The teaching programme that accompanies the Numicon maths shapes has been developed by the authors as they work with children and teachers on a daily basis. The teaching activities are described on a series of illustrated cards.
In the early stages children play with the Numicon shapes, through the teaching activities they begin to associate a number name with each shape and then start to use the shapes in practical arithmetic activities. Thus children develop their own mental imagery of number, relationships between numbers and arithmetic operations. As children’s understanding develops they cease to rely on the concrete Numicon imagery using their own mental imagery of number and relationships between numbers and arithmetic operations.
Numicon illustrates addition and subtraction, place value, doubling and halving, estimation, division, multiplication and much more. Pupils actively enjoy using Numicon, either independently or in groups. The colourful and durable pieces are ideal for whole class mental maths activities. As teachers begin to work with the materials they quickly find further ways of using Numicon maths shapes; percentages, fractions and decimals are all easily illustrated using the shapes.
Steps are being taken to link the Curriculum for Excellence outcomes and experiences to the Numicon resources

Active Maths Labels
With the increase in active learning teachers are often worried by the decline in 'evidence' in pupils' jotters. These labels, along with photographic evidence, help to reassure parents that the child has been learning. They are also a useful reminder to staff of many active ways that maths and numeracy can be undertaken.
The labels are designed for Avery L7160 labels.

A cd of a page of each of the labels exemplified and a 'blank' example are available from Elaine Magor ( elaine.magor@ea.argyll-bute.sch.uk)
