Education provision in Argyll and Bute has a justifiably excellent reputation. The area's primary schools have consistently exceeded national attainment measures in reading, writing and mathematics. At secondary school level, Argyll and Bute has an impressive average of over 90% of pupils achieving at least five standard grades at foundation, general or credit level and an average of over 20% of pupils achieving three Higher grades or more. National test results place the schools in Argyll and Bute at the top end of Scottish attainment In addition, school children from this area have a higher than national take-up of higher education placements.

Argyll and Bute has 82 primary schools and 10 secondary schools, with a total pupil roll of almost 13,500 and over 900 members of staff. Four islands have their own secondary school; children from other islands travel to the most accessible school, staying in hostels or other arranged accommodation during the school week where necessary. There are three learning centres catering for pupils with special educational needs, although most are educated in their own community in mainstream schools, reflecting the Council's policy of inclusion. An area network support team assists schools and class teachers with special educational needs requirements. Argyll and Bute Council believes in a full partnership with parents, demonstrated by the fact that all schools have a school board.
