The majority of children and young people with additional support needs in Argyll and Bute have their needs met within mainstream schools. A range of services is provided to support schools in meeting the needs of children and young people.
Schools are supported by Educational Psychologists, Area Network Support Teams and partner agencies such as Health. Support given will include advice and guidance on specific resources, including ICT, and appropriate strategies to support particular groups of children. Staff development on meeting the needs of children and young people is available annually, courses are detailed in the authority’s course calendar. There is no charge to staff for courses related to additional support needs.
Children and young people with additional needs may be supported in school by an SEN assistant, classroom assistant or pupil support assistant. Training is also available annually for non-teaching staff.
Our authority is committed to mainstream education for all children and young people. However it is recognised that the needs of a small group of pupils will be best met, either part-time or full-time in a more sheltered environment.
The Authority’s Policy framework for meeting pupils’ needs is detailed in ‘Supporting Children, Supporting Effective Learning’. This folder has been issued to all schools and is available to download through the above link.
The Additional Support for Learning Act, 2004 came into force on 14 November, 2005. A key message from the Act is that it is everyone’s responsibility to meet the needs of children and young people. With this in mind, schools are encouraged to establish a staged approach to supporting pupils.
Our authority works closely with Maureen Fairgrieve, SEED Regional Officer for ‘Better Behaviour, Better Learning’, to support schools in developing a whole school approach to managing behaviour. A range of courses related to behaviour management will be offered to schools in 2007. There will be no charge to staff for these courses.
