Glow Maintenance Notifications: We are continuing to investigate the issues with our Portal web servers as our highest priority. We are monitoring and are taking action as soon as we see any issues, hopefully minimising any impact.

Account and Services Manager Support through Glow: ‘Glow is re-launching the online training facility for all Account and Services Managers (ASMs) across Scotland. Sessions will be delivered as workshops and drop-ins whereby administrators can access the training Glow Group and participate in sessions delivered by a Glow technical consultant. This year’s sessions will be held fortnightly and the aim is rotate the days and times to accommodate as many users as possible. The group itself can be found from the following link ASM Support Glow Group or via the Glow Help group from the National Site. The site is open to all ASM and Staff users and all local authority and school ASM’s are welcome to join in via Glow Meet. Any particular questions outwith the sessions can be posted in the ASM Discussion Forum contained within the Glow Group. Details of the first two sessions are listed below: Friday 3rd September (11am-12pm) - New Glow Services discussion + Drop-In This first session of the new school year will have an update of the changes that have happened over the summer within Glow and any impact this may have for ASMs. This session will be delivered via the Glow Meet room within this page. ARGYLL AND BUTE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN IN NATIONAL AWARD FINAL: An Argyll and Bute Council employee has been nominated as UK School Librarian of the Year 2010.

Shiona Lawson, who works at Rothesay Academy on Bute, has been named on a shortlist of six school librarians from across the country who have reached the final of the prestigious competition. ...more


Anti Bullying Week: National Anti-Bullying Week 2010 takes place from Monday 15 to Friday 19 November, and is designed to raise awareness of anti-bullying initiatives among children, young people and adults across the UK and Ireland.

To mark the event Respect Me is launching a national competition based around the theme, 'what bullying means to me'. Schools and youth groups across Scotland will shortly be receiving their competition packs and the deadline for all entries is Friday 8 October.



HERMITAGE ACADEMY RECEIVES GLOWING REPORT : An official inspection of Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh has praised the school for all aspects of the education it provides.

School Librarian of the Year Award : Shiona Lawson, Librarian at Rothesay Academy, Isle of Bute, is one of six outstanding school librarians whose work is recognized on this year’s SLA School Librarian of the Year Honours List. The School Librarian of the Year Award celebrates the excellent work that is carried out in school libraries every day, and highlights best practice and innovation in school librarianship. This prestigious award will be presented at an award ceremony at London Zoo on International School Library Day, Monday 4th October. National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland: Consultation: The Scottish Government is consulting on revised guidance on child protection, to replace the 1998 guidance Protecting Children – A Shared Responsibility: Guidance on Inter-Agency Co-operation.

Education chiefs visit Rothesay Joint Campus: Michael Russell, Education Secretary will visit the Rothesay Joint Campus on Monday 23 August, before attending a discussion with senior education representatives from Argyll and Bute Council at Rothesay Pavilion.

The visit, hosted by Argyll and Bute Council, gives officials the chance to meet students and teachers at one of the council’s flagship schools. ...more


Linking Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Through STEM Pathways: STEM-ED Scotland in collaboration with the Association for Science Education, the Scottish Mathematical Council and the Scottish Technology Teachers Association have organised a seminar at the Gillbert Scott Conference Suite, University of Glasgow on Tuesday 31st August 2010.

Brain Doctors Glow Meet - 26th August 2010: Take part in some Scotland wide, practical hands on brain activities and then get the chance to quiz cutting edge scientists, Professor Stephen Lawrie and Professor Neil Roberts with your questions about the brain.

The Glow Meet is aimed at P6-S3 teachers and will run from 2pm - 3pm on Thursday 26th August 2010; with Q&A all day.

Upcoming Glow Meet Events - Sustainable Development: Tuesday 7th September 2010, 3:45pm to 5:45pm

Glow meet - Weather as an interdisciplinary context for learning within Curriculum for Excellence. This CPD session on Glow is targeted at practitioners in early years, primary and secondary schools and will be led by Heather Reid OBE, meteorologist and former weather presenter with the BBC.


Monday 13th September 2010, 11-12pm

Glow meet – Oceans, Biodiversity and Climate Change. This Glow meet, led by Heather Reid OBE and a marine biologist, will be targeted at pupils in upper primary and secondary schools.


The Big Green Challenge - REGISTER YOUR INTEREST NOW: a competition to test the topical science knowledge and debating skills of your pupils.

The competition has been modelled to focus on your S2 pupils and provides an excellent opportunity for cross curricular working.

the competition involves teams of four pupils debating renewable energy issues in each participating school (Oct to Dec 2010), with the strongest teams then going on to rounds between schools (Jan to Mar 2011), leading up to a final competition in April 2011. All of this is supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

The prize for the overall winners in 2010/11 will be a team trip to Spain to visit cutting edge examples of renewable energy generation. Runners up prizes include a team trip to the Eden Project in Cornwall, alongside a range of goodies to ensure that all finalists receive recognition of their achievement.

Connecting it up: Towards a Route Map for STEM education in Scotland: There are opportunities for practising STEM teachers to work together to create or build on activities that (i) are designed to deal with misconceptions, (ii) progressively develop concepts over the years and (iii) link or have the potential to link across the STEM areas. If practitioners within your authority have knowledge or experience of learning progressions, dealing with misconceptions and linking the STEM areas that they would like to share or further develop we would be interested to hear from them. ...more


Geology of Colonsay: The pupils at Kilchattan Primary School have been working very hard to produce a leaflet for visitors to the island.

With the help of funding from the DtS Challenge Fund the pupils have put together a fantastic information leaflet which includes some of the pupils art work and pictures from around Colonsay. The leaflet is now available in many outlets around the island.

Social Enterprise Awards: On Wednesday 16th June 2010 the contribution of two Argyll and Bute schools to Social Enterprise was acknowledged at the Social Enterprise Awards at Oran Mor.

Rothesay Joint Campus' Market Garden Project and Campbeltown Grammar School's Fairtrade Market Stall were among the 20 school projects that John Swinney MSP presented with awards.

Congratulations to both schools!
